International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade 2021

First observed in 2008 after a December 2007 resolution, the day honours and remembers the more than 15 million men, women and children who were brutalized under a slavery system that endured for more than 400 years. The legacy of the inhumane forced migration – 96 per cent of captives arrived in South America and the Caribbean islands – is the large population of people of African descent in the Americas.

It may be the United Nations’ seventy-fifth anniversary this year, but here’s a gift for you: a music event with more than 200 artists from all over the world, no ticket required, on Human Rights Day.

United Nations Population Award Ceremony 2020

The United Nations Population Award, which every year honours an individual and/or institution for outstanding contributions to population and reproductive health questions, was presented to the 2020 laureates during a virtual ceremony held on Thursday, 10 December 2020.

This year's winners are HelpAge India, in the institutional category, and Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck, Queen Mother of Bhutan, in the individual category.

Human Rights Day 2020

It has been 70 years since the United Nations formally established 10 December as Human Rights Day, after adopting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights two years earlier. (Fun fact: At more than 500 languages, it is the most translated document in the world.)  The Declaration lists 30 human rights, among them freedom, equality, liberty and security.
