Kicked off by the Government of Mexico in Mexico City in March, the Generation Equality Forum culminates with three days of events co-hosted by the Government of France in Paris, all to advance progress in realizing Sustainable Development Goal 5 by 2030: Achieve gender equality and empower women and girls.

High-Level Meeting on AIDS

As part of the High-Level Meeting on AIDS, UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem will participate at the 8 June side event entitled, “No Prevention, No End: The importance of leadership for HIV prevention – how decisions can turn an epidemic,” co-hosted by UNAIDS, of which UNFPA is a cosponsor, and the Global HIV Prevention Working Group.

Executive Board of UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS: Annual session 2021

The Executive Board holds its annual session, with the UNFPA portion on 10 June. Executive director Dr. Natalia Kanem will deliver a statement with an update on the impact of and the agency’s response to COVID-19, now in its second year, as well as a progress report on the implementation of the 2018-2021 Strategic Plan and statistical and financial review.

Nordic Talks

All women have a right to bodily autonomy, the power and agency to make decisions governing their own bodies and futures, yet nearly half of women in 57 developing countries are denied that right. 

UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem takes part in the virtual debate “Let’s Talk About Sex: Bodily Autonomy and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights” with Flemming Møller Mortensen, Danish Minister for International Development and Nordic Cooperation, and Natasha Wang Mwansa, adolescent sexual and reproductive health rights expert. Katja Iversen will moderate, and two-time world champion poet and UNCHR Goodwill Ambassador Emi Mahmoud will introduce the event, meant to inspire taking action toward gender equality around the world.

Nobel Prize Summit

Commission on Population and Development, 54th session

Every year since 1994, when the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) was adopted in Cairo, the Commission on Population and Development has met to review the programme’s progress at the national, regional and international levels. Prior to that, the commission (formed in 1946 and comprising representatives of 47 member states) met every two to three years.
