UNFPA Situation Report: Rohingya Humanitarian Response, Cox's Bazar - April-June 2023

The Rohingya crisis has entered its sixth year, and concerns are growing due to reduced funding and unstable security conditions. Currently, there are nearly one million Rohingya refugees living in 33 makeshift camps as well as on Bhasan Char Island. As a result of the funding constraints, the World Food Programme was forced to reduce the food ration from $12 to $8 per person, equivalent to 27 cents a day. This cut has a substantial impact on the lives of the Rohingya refugees, as they remain wholly dependent on humanitarian assistance for their survival.

In the recent quarter, Cyclone Mocha struck coastal areas on May 14, impacting movement, shelter, and lives, and damaging facilities including those supported by UNFPA. UNFPA played a key role in responding to the cyclone and its aftermath by leading coordination efforts for gender-based violence, distributing dignity and MAMA kits, providing counseling and awareness sessions, delivering midwifery services, and offering psychological first aid.

During the second quarter of 2023, UNFPA reached a total of 251,464 individuals, providing them with crucial information and services related to sexual and reproductive health, gender-based violence, and adolescent sexual and reproductive health. Moreover, 53,356 women and girls, including adolescents and individuals with disabilities, accessed Women's Friendly Spaces, highlighting UNFPA's commitment to addressing the diverse needs of this vulnerable population.
