Statement

Voluntary family planning, including condoms, essential to prevent spread of Zika virus

10 March 2016

Statement by UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin on family planning and Zika virus

Concerned by reports of the Zika virus spreading through sexual contact, UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, strongly urges governments and all other partners to provide information and access to voluntary family planning, including condoms. These services enable women to make informed decisions about their reproductive health, and all individuals to protect themselves from infection.

As the world’s leading agency on sexual and reproductive health and the biggest public sector procurer of contraceptives, including condoms, UNFPA will continue to work with countries around the world to scale up access to voluntary family planning and maternal health services for everyone who needs them.
