UNFPA’s Events during the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly

UNITED NATIONS, New York, 14 September 2023 — The 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly will be held in New York from 19 September to 26 September. UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, will organize and participate in several side events. These include: 

Power of Data: Unlocking the Data Dividend for the SDGs

Data is the fuel for progress across all areas of international development. Marking the launch of the Power of Data High Impact Initiative, this event will highlight how data can catalyze SDG progress, and serve as a launching point for data partnerships and streamlining financing. Speakers include UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem and UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador Ashley Judd. 

Spotlight Initiative @ 2023 SDG Summit

This high-impact event will highlight the successes of the  first phase of the UN Spotlight Initiative to end gender-based violence, including commitments from Member States to end violence against women and girls. Speakers and performers include UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem, UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador Ashley Judd, musician Natasha Bedingfield, actresses Cecilia Suarez and Natalie Portman, actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. 

Building an equitable future through women-centric innovations - Introducing the Equity 2030 Alliance

While technological innovations are growing at an exponential pace, their benefits are not equitable. Women are being excluded from the design and development of products and services, and women-centric solutions are not receiving the investment they need. This side event will discuss how the public and private sectors can close the gaps in gender inclusive solutions in science, technology, and financing by 2030. Moderated by Sree Sreenivasan, ex-Chief Digital Officer of New York City, opening remarks by UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem.

ICPD30: Celebrating milestones, inspiring action

Thirty years on from the first International Conference on Population and Development, this event will explore what is at stake at this crucial moment in its history and the gaps that remain in realizing the vision outlined in Cairo in 1994. It will also provide an overview of the ICPD30 review process and explore ways for stakeholders to engage. Opening remarks by UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem.
