Myanmar

Myanmar faces a severe and protracted humanitarian crisis, marked by more than five years of intensifying conflict, natural disasters, economic deterioration and mass displacement. More than 16 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, with escalating military operations across the country severely impeding access to healthcare and the transport of medical supplies, leaving many communities without life-saving services.

Nearly 3.7 million people are displaced, the highest figure on record, with most having fled their homes multiple times in search of safety. Instead, many find themselves in informal shelters with limited access to food, healthcare and clean water.

Women and girls are disproportionately affected by the crisis, as conflict, climate shocks and displacement heighten risks of gender-based violence and disrupt access to maternal healthcare services. More than 7.6 million people are in need of gender-based violence response services and sexual and reproductive healthcare.

The crisis has been further compounded by the devastating earthquake of 28 March 2025, which caused widespread death and destruction and deepened the vulnerabilities of communities already stretched beyond their limits.

UNFPA is working with partners to sustain access to essential sexual and reproductive health services through conflict-sensitive, flexible delivery models, prioritizing antenatal and postnatal care, family planning, management of common reproductive health conditions and referrals for emergency obstetric and newborn care.
