ICPD30: Celebrating Milestones, Inspiring Action

78th UN General Assembly Side Event

2024 marks 30 years since the adoption of one of the milestones of multilateralism, the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). This is cause for celebration of all the achievements made possible by the ICPD agenda since 1994. It also comes at a time of great polarization on many issues that are fundamental to the agenda - including the need to advance in realizing sexual and reproductive health and rights as an integral part of development.

To build momentum for the 30-year review of ICPD implementation (ICPD30) UNFPA and the Governments of Bulgaria and Sweden are co-hosting a side-event on the margins of 78th High Level Week of the UN General Assembly in New York. Opening and closing remarks will be delivered by Dr. Natalia Kanem, UNFPA Executive Director, H.E. Mariya Gabriel the Deputy Prime Minister of Bulgaria and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Johan Forssell, Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade of Sweden, and Ms. Diene Keita, UNFPA Deputy Executive Director- Programme.

This will bring together governments and stakeholders including CSOs, young people and parliamentarians to celebrate 30 years’ progress, to discuss what is at stake, to explore ways to participate in the review process and mobilize support for the ICPD Agenda.

The event will take place from 1:15 to 2:30 pm EDT on Thursday 21 September 2023 at the UN Secretariat in Conference Room 12. RSVP to attend in-person. The event will also be live streamed on UN WebTV.
