Launched: Lessons from meaningful youth engagement in UNFPA evaluation, upholding the Youth in Evaluation standards

07 Nov 2023

On 7 November 2023, a virtual event convened by the Eval4Action campaign united the evaluation community and young evaluation professionals for a discussion on implementing the Youth in Evaluation standards. These standards play a pivotal role in translating the vision of the Youth in Evaluation manifesto into real-world practices. The UNFPA Evaluation Office, alongside 900 other organizations and individuals, is a signatory to this manifesto.

As part of its commitment to youth engagement in evaluation, the UNFPA Evaluation Office has documented insights from its groundbreaking approach to engaging young people during the formative evaluation of UNFPA support to adolescents and youth.

Young professionals played multifaceted roles in the evaluation, such as contributors, evaluators, key informants, co-managers, and, most importantly, co-decision makers, marking a significant milestone within the United Nations system. An innovative Youth Steering Committee co-managed the evaluation with senior professionals at UNFPA Evaluation Office. These valuable insights, captured in a publication and a short film were launched at the event, encapsulating an intergenerational perspective on youth engagement in evaluation.

The lessons uphold and often surpass the requirements outlined in the Youth in Evaluation standards, offering a robust foundation to deliberate on practical and actionable strategies to advance youth engagement in evaluation in all sectors.
