In late September 2023, Armenia saw an influx of refugees due to renewed conflict in the Karabakh region. As of October 3rd, more than 100,000 refugees had crossed the border, with over 85,000 already registered in humanitarian centers across the country. Nearly half of them are women and girls, including 2,070 pregnant women. The Armenian government and UN agencies, including UNFPA, are conducting a rapid needs assessment to tailor the emergency response to their specific needs.

Thanks to preparedness efforts, UNFPA swiftly provided humanitarian support upon the refugees' arrival, including:

  • Distributing 13,000 dignity kits.
  • Offering training to 35 local service providers on gender-based violence (GBV) support, GBV referral pathways, and survivor-centered assistance for women and girls.
  • Establishing two safe spaces for women and girls.
  • Distributing 20 inter-agency reproductive health kits to health facilities. These kits can meet the essential sexual and reproductive health needs of up to 150,000 people.
