Herat province in western Afghanistan experienced two 6.3 magnitude earthquakes on the 5th and 7th of October 2023. Aftershocks continued until 14 October. On October 15, a third 6.3 magnitude tremor struck northeast of Herat City, marking the third quake in a week. The Herat Earthquake Response Plan is focused on around 114,000 people in high-impact intensity areas, especially those with severely damaged or demolished homes.

The Herat Earthquake Response Plan requires US$93.6 million to provide humanitarian assistance from October 2023 to March 2024. UNFPA requires $11.6 million to scale up current interventions, replenish emergency stocks, and provide maternal, reproductive health, and psychosocial support to the affected population. UNFPA and its NGO partners have already assisted 30,903 people affected by the earthquake.
