On October 7, 2023, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Herat province in western Afghanistan, and aftershocks continued until October 11. These ongoing aftershocks have caused the estimated number of affected individuals to increase.

As of October 12, the Humanitarian Country Team estimates that more than 318,000 people are in need of assistance. Among them, UNFPA estimates that 76,320 are women of reproductive age, including 7,435 who are currently pregnant, and 38,160 are adolescent girls aged 10 to 19.

UNFPA continues to address the immediate maternal and reproductive health needs and support for gender-based violence and psychosocial support (GBV/PSS).
