Statement by Thoraya Ahmed Obaid on Killing in Kabul

Thoraya Ahmed Obaid, the Executive Director of UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, today expressed deep sadness at the loss of lives of some United Nations staff and Afghan people in today’s attacks in Kabul. She extended her heartfelt sympathies to all of the families and friends of the dead or wounded.

Appealing to parliamentarians from more than 115 countries, who were meeting in Addis Ababa today, Ms. Obaid said: “I call on you, parliamentarians of the world, to make sure that extra measures are taken to protect the lives all people, including United Nations staff working in your countries to serve the people who elected you.”

The parliamentarians were gathered for the 4th International Parliamentarians’ Conference on the Implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action.
