Statement on the Occasion of the International Day of Older Persons

01 October 2006

Today, UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, joins others in commemorating the International Day of Older Persons. The elderly are the world's fastest growing population group, with those 60 years or older constituting one person in 10, a figure that is expected to rise to one person in five by mid-century.

Today, we pay tribute to older persons and the wisdom that comes with a lifetime of experience.

The theme of this year’s observance, "Improving the Quality of Life for Older Persons: Advancing UN Global Strategies," points to the leading role of the United Nations in fostering a society for all ages—one in which young and old, men and women, rich and poor, can enjoy long, happy and healthy lives with opportunities for individual development and self-fulfilment.

Of particular concern to UNFPA are the millions of older poor throughout the world, especially women, who are struggling alone to make ends meet, who have no access to basic social and health services, and who suffer violence and abuse. They need greater support. It is also time to ensure greater support for the countless older women who are caregivers of grandchildren orphaned and affected by AIDS.

Most importantly, it is time to recognize the significant contributions that older persons make to our families, communities and societies. Throughout their lives, they have given their time and energy to helping others and they continue to do so. In return, we should do more to support their human rights and freedoms, including their right to live in dignity and security—free from want and free from fear.

Next year will mark the fifth anniversary of the Second World Assembly on Ageing. The international community will review progress towards the implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing that was adopted in 2002. It is critical that we use this opportunity to renew our commitment to address the challenges of population ageing, and strengthen dialogue, partnerships and planning to improve the quality of life of people of all generations.
