Background Information

Launched by the UN Secretary-General during the United Nations Millennium Development Goals Summit in September 2010, Every Woman Every Child is an unprecedented global movement that mobilizes and intensifies international and national action by governments, multilaterals, the private sector and civil society to address the major health challenges facing women, children and adolescents around the world. The movement puts into action the Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health, which presents a roadmap to ending all preventable deaths of women, children and adolescents within a generation and ensuring their well-being.

Every Woman Every Child provides an opportunity to improve the health of women, children and adolescents everywhere, and in so doing, to improve the lives of all people. The health of women, children and adolescents is critically important to almost every area of human development and progress, and directly impacts our success in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by world leaders in September 2015.

Under the strategic direction of the UN Secretary General and the High-level Steering Group (HLSG), the Every Woman Every Child Secretariat supports the high-level positioning of the Global Strategy in the global health architecture, and contributes to improving synergies among stakeholders of the EWEC Ecosystem, particularly among the H6, the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH), and the Global Financing Facility (GFF).

The EWEC Secretariat is hosted by UNFPA on behalf of the H6, and reports to Executive Office of the Secretary General (EOSG) on vision and strategy, and to UNFPA on work plan and operations. The Coordinator is located in the Office of the Executive Director of UNFPA. The Coordinator reports directly on a day-to-day basis to the UNFPA Deputy Executive Director of Programmes who provides overall operational direction. S/he leads the work of the Secretariat and coordinates and supports the implementation of the Global Strategy, in alignment with the EWEC partner framework and in close collaboration with the PMNCH.

The Coordinator will collaborate closely with EWEC partners including the EOSG, H6, GFF, PMNCH and regional EWEC initiatives. The Coordinator will coordinate with the following external partners: donor and programme countries, international organizations, Centers of Excellence, IGOs, NGOs, academia, research institutions, professional associations, and international experts.

Within UNFPA the Coordinator will work closely with OED, TD director and TD Management team and M&E Advisers to promote knowledge sharing and results-based management; establish functional links to enhance the effectiveness and accountability of the day-to-day work of the secretariat; and to disseminate communications and advocacy products.
