The Multilingual Digital Officer will be responsible for managing language versions of UNFPA digital platforms. The incumbent will be instrumental in the creation and launch of the global website in the Arabic language. 

With guidance from the Digital Communications Specialist (Country Offices) and the Digital Editor, the Multilingual Digital Officer will be responsible for the day-to-day editorial planning of website content in Arabic, French and Spanish.

Working with the Digital Communications Analyst, the successful candidate will make recommendations for audience-specific design of the multilingual site and advise the digital team on language-specific user interface and user experience matters in particular for Arabic readers. 

The Multilingual Digital Officer will work closely with the UNFPA Social Media team and the UNFPA Regional Offices to support the production of multilingual Social Media packs.

Major Activities/Expected Results

Creating an Arabic version of the global UNFPA website

Currently the UNFPA global website is available in English, French and Spanish. In order to deliver content to millions of Arabic speakers in the world, a new language version of the UNFPA website will be launched. 

The Multilingual Digital Officer will assure the launch of the new UNFPA Arabic website; specifically:

  • Work with external vendors to translate existing and new content of the UNFPA website into Arabic 
  • In close collaboration with the Arab States Regional Office, assure the quality and accuracy of existing and new translations from English into Arabic
  • Work with graphic designers and developers to build an Arabic language user interface for the  UNFPA global website  
  • Publish stories and other content in Arabic 

Managing the language versions of the UNFPA global website 

The UNFPA global website is largely produced in English and translated in French, Spanish and Arabic. Depending on the language version,  audiences and interest might change and require adapted editorial planning. 

The Multilingual Digital Officer is responsible for the timely and accurate publishing of language versions on the UNFPA global website. In particular: 

  • Manage the editorial planning of the UNFPA global website in Arabic, French and Spanish
  • Analyse the performance of language content, identify opportunities and recommend audience-specific considerations as a contribution to the UNFPA digital strategy 
  • Identify qualified vendors for translations, manage relationships and oversee the  procurement of those vendors
  • Manage the translation workflow within the digital team and with external contributors and vendors
  • Work with Regional Offices in Latin America and the Caribbean, West and Central Africa and the Arab States to assure the quality and accuracy of language content and adherence to UN style. Identify editorial preferences or possible sensitivities with those audiences.

Managing language versions of UNFPA Social Media packs 

UNFPA distributes topical Social Media packs on specific occasions or days within the organization and the UN system. The Social Media packs are translated from English to French, Spanish, Arabic and sometimes Portuguese.

The Multilingual Digital Officer will: 

  • Work closely with the Social Media team to establish a translation workflow for the packs that allows timely delivery
  • Work with translators to assure the timely availability of translations for inclusion in their pack
  • Work with external graphic designers to assure the timely production of language versions of the packs
  • Work with Regional Offices in Latin America and the Caribbean, West and Central Africa and the Arab States to assure the quality and accuracy of translations and their adaptation to regional specificities

The Multilingual Digital Officer must be committed to UNFPA’s values and guiding principles; be able to work on a team; and have excellent judgement both editorially and interpersonally. The Multilingual Digital Officer must be in tune with the latest trends in website design and social media.

The Multilingual Digital Officer position is situated in the Media and Communications Branch of the Division for Communications and Strategic Partnerships and reports to the Head of Digital Communications.

Requirements

Fluency in Arabic and English is required.

Writing and editing skills in Arabic, including a strong understanding of online storytelling, as well as a strong background in editorial work.

Ability to read French, Spanish or Portuguese is an important asset. 

Undergraduate university degree in Journalism, Communications, International Development or a similar field. An advanced university degree is an advantage. 

At least two years of relevant professional experience in news reporting, journalistic writing, public relations, editing or other areas of communications. Additional experience, in particular international experience, is an advantage.

Knowledge of web design, with understanding of user experience and user interface principles. Experience with writing optimized for search engines. Experience with writing for social media is an advantage.

Knowledge of international development issues.
