Background

UNFPA is hosting a policy roundtable with leaders 41 international faith-based organizations who are involved in development and relief programmes in over 120 countries.

Twelve UN agencies and international development counterparts have also confirmed their participation in the Roundtable.

The meeting follows on the heels of a series of regional consultations with faith-based organization that culminated in a Global Consultation (Istanbul, October 2008). Based on these meetings UNFPA has amassed a detailed list of recommendations for concrete actions, launched the first Global Interfaith Network and Directory for Population and Development and developed Guidelines for Engaging Faith-based Organizations.

This roundtable is an opportunity to engage the most critical international faith-based service delivery mechanisms – such as Islamic Relief, Adventist Development and Relief Agency, Lutheran World Service and the Alliance of Religions for Conservation – in setting the priorities for the MDG count-down in 2015. Migration, climate change, HIV and AIDS, women's empowerment and gender-based violence are some of the issues on the table during the two-day consultation. The aim is to agree on actions that can be jointly undertaken.

On August 5, the participating UN agencies will meet to reflect on the way forward as an inter-agency task force on faith-based organization.
