Midwifery side-session at the Global Forum on Human Resources for Health

This side event, organized and hosted by UNFPA and will include panel explore how workforce policy decisions impact on maternal and newborn health programmes. Panelists will offer perspectives on what workforce scenario is best: a limited number of competent midwifery professionals versus a large number of multi-purpose workers.

They will also discuss:

  • What makes midwives different from other health workers? (ICM, Bridget Lynch)
  • Are programmes to address health MDGs sensitive to the needs of midwives and other skilled attendants? Role of international NGOs and partnership (Jhpiego, Jeff Smith)
  • Special needs and special solutions for the MDG5, A case story (Djibouti MoH, Mrs Mounira Ali)
  • A community midwife or a midwife in the community? The life and work of a practicing midwife (Sairam Saadat, Afghanistan)
  • What do obstetricians and doctors expect from mid-level health professionals in midwifery? (FIGO, Hamid Rushwan)
  • Discussion and Summary led by the moderator
