The 70th Session of the UN General Assembly

15 September 2015

United Nation Headquarters, New York

The 70th session of the UN General Assembly commences on 15 September 2015. This year – the 70th anniversary of the United Nations – marks decades of international cooperation and achievement. It also marks the culmination of 15 years of progress towards the ambitious Millennium Development Goals, which were adopted in 2000.

At this year’s General Assembly, the Sustainable Development Summit will see the adoption of a new set of goals, the Sustainable Development Goals, which will pave the path towards global development for the years to come.

These new goals will guide UNFPA's work for years to come. Of crucial importance are Goals 3, 4 and 5 – those on health, education and gender equality, respectively. See how UNFPA is contributing to this transformative new agenda.

UNFPA is also hosting a special event during the Summit, focusing on meeting the needs of young people in the terrorism-afflicted Lake Chad Basin. This event will take place on 26 September in Conference Room 5 at the United Nations Secretariat, New York.

And on 27 September, UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin will participate in a session at the Social Good Summit with actress Ashley Judd, focusing on sexual and reproductive health.
