United Nations

The Rafael M. Salas Memorial Lecture series was initiated in 1989 as a tribute to Mr. Salas, the first Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund, in recognition of the critical role he played in developing a global awareness and consensus about the importance of population in relation to social and economic development.

The 12th Rafael M. Salas Memorial Lecture will be delivered by the Honourable Mr. Yasuo Fukuda, former Prime Minister of Japan, on Challenges for Sustainable Development in a New Era: Population, Climate Change and Global Security. The lecture will be followed by a question-and-answer period and a reception, to which Representatives of Member States of the United Nations, senior United Nations officials and agency heads, representatives of non-governmental organizations, media representatives and selected academics are invited.
