This annual report describes the results and good practices in countries of the UNFPA flagship thematic fund to achieve reproductive health commodity security.

In 2013, UNFPA started a new programming period by scaling up so that all 46 countries can receive the highest level of support for essential supplies and services (formerly focused on 12 countries). The 2013-2020 programme continues to engage governments and partners in strengthening national health systems and places greater emphasis on partnership, young people and hard-to-reach populations with high unmet need for family planning. An enhanced Programme Monitoring Framework tracks results.

Contraceptives procured by the programme in 2013 amounted to 35 million couple years of protection, which have the potential to avert 9.5 million unintended pregnancies, 6.4 million unintended births, 27,300 maternal deaths and 1.1 million unsafe abortions. Programme expenditures totalled $164 million for commodity procurement and capacity development.
