UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem's Message on the Nairobi Summit Anniversary

Published on: 10/11/2020

One year ago, we gathered at the Nairobi Summit on ICPD 25 and committed to realizing a world of sexual and reproductive health and rights for all. Governments, corporations, civil society organizations, and individuals from all around the world made more than 1,200 voluntary commitments. Altogether, they pledged over $8 billion to achieve zero unmet need for contraception, zero preventable maternal deaths and certainly zero gender-based violence and harmful practices—all by 2030, the deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals.

In Nairobi, a broad and reinvigorated coalition of stakeholders found new resolve to realize the promise of the ICPD and to leave no one behind. While Covid-19 has made the road ahead more challenging, our march forward continues.

Success is assured if we hold steadfast to the commitments made in Nairobi. Our ambitions are great, and our collective will is greater.
