Venezuela is facing a major humanitarian emergency following two consecutive earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 that struck the central-northern region of the country on 24 June, causing widespread destruction and more than 130 aftershocks.

The confirmed death toll was at least 1,450 people as of 29 June, but that number is likely far short of the actual figure, as tens of thousands are believed to be missing. At least 3,200 people have been injured, with numbers rising.

UNFPA is working to address the life-saving sexual and reproductive health and protection needs of women and girls affected by the earthquake. It is imperative that essential maternal health services, emergency obstetric care, family planning, clinical management of rape, and gender-based violence prevention and response services remain available from the earliest stages of the emergency. To that end, essential supplies and equipment are currently being shipped to affected areas.

UNFPA is also working with partners to secure resources in support of rapid needs assessments and to respond to the most pressing needs of women, girls, adolescents and vulnerable populations affected by the earthquake.
