In recent years, there has been significant global momentum towards eliminating female genital mutilation (FGM), with much advancement in shaping policy environments but less consistent progress at the community level. In response to this urgent need, UNFPA and UNICEF jointly lead the largest global programme to accelerate the elimination of FGM since 2008. The UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of FGM is completing its third phase (2018-2021).

A new joint evaluation, conducted by the Evaluation Offices of UNFPA and UNICEF, informs the design of the Joint Programme post-Phase III to accelerate towards the Sustainable Development Goal target to end female genital mutilation (FGM) by 2030. This evaluation marks the third joint evaluation of the Programme.

This forward looking evaluation provides lessons to support informed decision making, learning and adaptation of the Joint Programme. The evidence captured in the joint evaluation will also support the accelerated implementation of the UNFPA strategic plan, 2022-2025.
