South Sudan continues to face a severe humanitarian emergency, driven by ongoing violence and conflicts, climate shocks, a struggling economy and disease outbreaks – most recently Ebola in May 2026.  

The safety and well-being of millions of people is constantly threatened by widespread displacement and fragile health and education systems. Reports of sexual violence, coercion, exploitation and harmful practices such as child marriage are soaring amid the turmoil.

To support and protect women and girls in South Sudan, UNFPA manages safe spaces and one-stop centres where people can seek sexual and reproductive healthcare, psychosocial support, cash assistance and gender-based violence response services.

Working in hard-to-reach and high-risk areas, UNFPA also collaborates with partners on the ground to distribute essential sanitary and health supplies, implement gender-based violence prevention programmes and awareness-raising activities, and promote gender equality among broader communities.
