UNFPA Situation Report on Central African Republic – April 2026

In April 2026, the humanitarian situation in the Central African Republic (CAR) remained critical. Instability—fueled by armed violence, structural poverty, and climate shocks—continues to increase the vulnerability of populations and limit humanitarian access, particularly in the prefectures of Haut-Mbomou, Mbomou, Basse-Kotto, Haute-Kotto, and Vakaga.

The security situation in Bowaye declined further as renewed armed incursions led to the displacement of approximately 6,000 people on 21 April 2026. This new wave of violence and resulting displacement is placing additional pressure on local resources and compounding the humanitarian challenges already present in the region.

From 23 to 26 April 2026, the UNFPA Acting Deputy Executive Director for Programmes conducted a high-level mission to CAR, during which he met with the President of the Republic and the President of the National Assembly to strengthen advocacy efforts on sexual and reproductive health (SRH), the protection of women and girls, and youth empowerment.

During April, UNFPA and its implementing partners reached a total of 4,744 people with SRH services, and 8,569 people with gender-based violence (GBV) prevention and response activities in CAR. An additional 11,243 people, including 1,884 adolescents and youth, were also reached with information on family planning, prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, and available GBV support services.

In 2026, UNFPA requires US$13.2 million to sustain its humanitarian response in CAR. However, as of the end of April, 83 per cent of the appeal remained unfunded. Additional donor support is urgently needed to ensure the continuity of life-saving SRH and protection services.
