Nigeria has recorded more than 65,000 suspected cholera cases across 35 states and about 195 Local Government Areas (LGAs) since the start of the year, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC). Borno State remains the epicenter, with Maiduguri, Monguno, and Jere being the hardest hit.
Severe violence and herder-farmer conflicts across Northwest and North-Central Nigeria caused widespread civilian displacement, hitting women and children hardest. An estimated 724,543 people are displaced across Zamfara and Benue states only , with women and children among those most affected by ongoing violence, herder-farmer conflicts, and disruptions to livelihoods. UNFPA and partners provided 150 emergency dignity kits, alongside sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and gender-based violence (GBV) services, to support affected women and girls.
Heavy seasonal rainfall in mid-to-late August triggered severe urban and riverine flooding across non-BAY states (such as Nasarawa's Lafia LGA, Anambra, and Ondo States), destroying property, inundating health infrastructure, and amplifying displacement risks. In August, UNFPA and partners reached 8,769 people with SRH services and 5,993 people with GBV prevention, mitigation, and response services across 60 health facilities and 34 safe spaces.
