Sudan is currently enduring one of the world's most severe humanitarian and displacement crises, characterized by over three years of conflict that has severely damaged infrastructure and isolated communities in regions such as Darfur, Kordofan, and Blue Nile. The collapse of the health system has critically limited access to essential sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, heightening maternal and newborn health risks, while widespread insecurity and the breakdown of community protection mechanisms have significantly intensified threats for women and girls, particularly regarding gender-based violence (GBV). Despite an estimated 4.6 million people returning to their areas of origin, these populations face substantial challenges due to destroyed infrastructure and severely limited access to essential services. The humanitarian outlook remains precarious, as the upcoming rainy season is expected to further disrupt aid delivery, heighten public health risks through disease outbreaks, and exacerbate existing protection vulnerabilities.
UNFPA is responding to the crisis in Sudan through provision of integrated SRH and GBV services through 14 partners across 86 health facilities. UNFPA reached over 167,000 individuals with essential health services in May and June 2026, including maternal and newborn care, family planning, and immunization services, while utilizing cash and voucher assistance to reduce financial barriers to safe deliveries and obstetric care. Additionally, integrated programming supported survivor-centred care for GBV, encompassing clinical management of rape, psychological support, and referrals to protection services. Further operational support was directed to conflict-affected areas, including the deployment of mobile health teams and community midwives to sustain emergency obstetric and newborn care.
In 2026, UNFPA is appealing for US $129.2 million to respond to critical SRH and GBV needs in Sudan. To date, around 33% of this funding has been received, leaving a significant gap of US $86 million. UNFPA continues to call for urgent financial support to address the growing needs of women and girls across the country.
