Throughout August, women and girls in Sudan continued to face significant humanitarian and protection challenges amid ongoing conflict, displacement and deteriorating economic conditions.
Renewed fighting in Blue Nile State displaced approximately 21,000 people, adding to existing humanitarian needs and placing further strain on already overstretched health and protection services.
Across Greater Kordofan, continued hostilities and insecurity are driving further displacement, while heavy rains and flooding are worsening living conditions and restricting access to essential services in displacement sites and makeshift settlements. The humanitarian situation is further compounded by a cholera outbreak, with more than 2,200 cases and 160 deaths reported.
During August, UNFPA and its partners reached nearly 121,700 people with sexual and reproductive health services and more than 71,000 people with gender-based violence prevention and response services. However, UNFPA’s appeal remains significantly underfunded, with only 37 per cent received of the US$129.2 million required. This funding shortfall is limiting UNFPA’s ability to sustain and scale up life-saving services for women and girls across Sudan.
