Situation report on the crisis in Somalia (April-June 2026)

Approximately 6 million people in Somalia — about 31% of the population — are facing crisis levels of food insecurity, with acute malnutrition, anaemia, and undernutrition severely affecting pregnant and breastfeeding women, particularly in the Bay Region. This crisis is compounded by significant funding shortfalls that have disrupted essential sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services and forced the closure of more than half of the country's registered gender-based violence (GBV) service facilities, leaving survivors with severely limited access to life-saving protection, case management, and referral services.

Between April and June 2026, UNFPA provided life-saving SRH services to over 47,000 women and girls in Somalia. Maternal health efforts included over 25,300 consultations, 3,347 skilled deliveries, and the management of nearly 1,200 birth-related complications, supported by the deployment of 53 midwives to 16 health facilities. Additionally, UNFPA trained 45 health workers in family planning facilitation, enabling 7,864 women to access modern contraceptives. UNFPA also reached 5,383 people with specialized GBV services and information, provided psychosocial support to 850 women and girls, and trained 175 front-line personnel to strengthen service delivery.

For its 2026 humanitarian response in Somalia, UNFPA requires US $27 million to deliver life-saving SRH and GBV services; however, only 19 per cent has been secured to date. Urgent and flexible funding is required to ensure the continuity of life-saving services and to uphold the health, safety, and dignity of affected women and girls.
