On 26 August 2026, severe flash floods affected the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors, initially impacting Rasuwa and subsequently downstream areas of Nuwakot, Dhading and towards Chitwan. The floods have caused significant loss of life and extensive damage to critical infrastructure. Approximately 10,000 households have been affected, 626 people are currently reported to have died and more than 2,400 people are missing.
Based on available population data, 310,076 people live in the affected areas, including approximately 86,820 women of reproductive age and 4,430 pregnant women. Damage to health facilities, roads, bridges and electricity infrastructure is disrupting access to life-saving sexual and reproductive health services, including emergency obstetric referrals, as well as complicating the delivery of essential humanitarian assistance.
UNFPA has mobilized 2,000 dignity kits for affected women and girls, with delivery to affected communities facilitated through the Government of Nepal and the Nepal Red Cross Society. The response also includes the deployment of two mobile health units, alongside reproductive health supplies, to help maintain life-saving reproductive and maternal health services in affected areas. Remote psychosocial support services have also been activated to provide immediate remote assistance to affected populations, with a standby roster of trained personnel available for rapid deployment as psychosocial needs emerge.
