This manual is meant for training programme managers to promote the abandonment of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C). It has been designed under a joint programme of the United Nations Population Fund and the United Nations Children’s Fund. The Joint Programme applies an innovative approach to FGM/C abandonment, using a social norms perspective to guide the selection of an appropriate mix of strategies and activities most conducive to self-sustained social change.

In  2009, the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Abandonment of FGM/C expanded activities to reach 12 of the 17 countries covered. This report document its activities for the year.

This is the first annual report of the Joint Programme, whose objective is to contribute to a 40 per cent reduction of the practice among girls aged 0-15 years in key countries, with at least one country declared free of FGM/C by 2012.

Publications

UNFPA and UNICEF will work jointly towards actively contributing to the accelerated abandonment of FGM/C, in specific areas of implementation within 17 countries, by 2012.
