Harnessing Africa's Demographic Dividend - empowering women and girls
Representatives of 52 African countries, experts, UN agencies and around 200 civil society and youth representatives will gather at the Regional Conference on Population and Development Beyond 2014 at the United Nations Conference Centre, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The conference "Harnessing the Demographic Dividend: The future we want for Africa" is organised in partnership with the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and seeks to emphasize the need for state and non-state actors to recommit themselves at the highest level to fully implementing the ICPD Programme of Action at both national and regional levels.
Participants at the conference have been tasked with reviewing evidence of progress, challenges, gaps and emerging issues in relation to the achievement of the goals set out in ICPD Programme of Action which underpins UNFPA's mandate. Together they will develop recommendations to accelerate progress towards the goals set out in Cairo in 1994 which emphasized the needs and sexual and reproductive health rights of women and girls.
