UNFPA’s Events during the 52nd Session of the Commission on Population and Development

Ashley Judd to give keynote at opening ceremony

UNITED NATIONS, New York--The fifty-second session of the Commission on Population and Development will be held here from 1 - 5 April. During the session, UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, will organize a number of events with partners to assess actions needed to implement the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD PoA), which was adopted in Cairo 25 years ago, and how it contributes to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. 

These events include:

Monday, 1 April

Opening Ceremony
UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador Ashley Judd will give the keynote address on gender equality, the empowerment of women and girls, sexual and reproductive health care, and reproductive rights in today’s world.

Ministerial Level Side Event on South-South Cooperation for the Achievement of the ICPD PoA and the SDGs
A panel discussion featuring senior officials from Bangladesh, China and Egypt about the importance of South-South cooperation as an effective tool for achieving the ICPD Programme of Action and the Sustainable Development Goals.

When:         1:15 to 2:30 pm 

ICPD PoA : Journey from Cairo to Nairobi: Realizing the Promise
The governments of Kenya and Denmark, together with UNFPA, will host a discussion on how the 52nd Session of the Commission on Population and Development can accelerate momentum towards the 2019 Nairobi Summit on ICPD25.

Tuesday, 2 April

Faith-based Approaches to Sexual and Reproductive Health from a Human Rights’ Perspective
A discussion about the main challenges in the nexus between religion and sexual and reproductive health and rights, and how we can address them. That includes ideas about what UN entities, governments, and NGOs, including faith actors, do to achieve the ICPD Programme of Action.
