UN Population Fund Mourns Staff Member Killed in Mongolia Crash

United Nations, New York - Staff members of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) are mourning their colleague, Dr. Bayarmaa Batchuluun, killed in Sunday’s helicopter crash in north-west Mongolia. Dr. Bayarmaa, a National Programme Officer in UNFPA’s Mongolia field office, died along with three other UN personnel and five others on a humanitarian assessment mission in a region suffering from drought and blizzards.

Dr. Bayarmaa, a 35-year-old physician, had worked in the Mongolia offices of UNFPA and UNICEF since 1993. She is survived by her husband and two daughters, ages 6 and 10. UNFPA Executive Director Thoraya Obaid sent the family a message of condolence which noted that Dr. Bayarmaa was “a highly respected member of the UNFPA staff and her untimely death is a great shock to her many friends and colleagues all over the world.”
