Statement by UNFPA Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehin on Japanese Earthquakes and Tsunami

United Nations, New York — On behalf of UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, I express our deepest sympathy to the people and Government of Japan following the catastrophic earthquakes and tsunami. We are shocked and saddened by the death of thousands of people and the widespread destruction, and present our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved nation.

In a spirit of solidarity, we join the United Nations Secretary General in standing by the Japanese people, ready to join the international community’s efforts in extending all possible assistance.
