Press Release

New Gender Resource Advances Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights

09 May 2017

UNITED NATIONS, New York—EngenderHealth and UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, announced the publication of a new digital resource: Engaging men in sexual and reproductive health and rights, including family planning: Why Using A Gender Lens Matters. The resource will help programme managers design, implement, and evaluate programmes that engage men as clients, as supportive partners, and as champions for gender equality and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).

Gender influences women’s and men’s health in fundamental ways, and rigid ideas about gender can place everyone at risk. Assessing, reflecting on and challenging harmful gender norms are fundamental to any programme or intervention that seeks to improve SRHR. Programming that ignores or minimizes the influence of gender norms may potentially do more harm than good. In fact, men and boys can play a critical role in promoting gender equality and positive sexual and reproductive health outcomes.

The new gender resource is practical and adaptable; it provides tools that match a user’s priorities, clear action steps, and a myriad of existing gender publications from various agencies/organizations. The publication will help programme managers in advancing SRHR in a sustainable and impactful manner that results in positive health outcomes.
