MEDIA ADVISORY: UNFPA Events During 10-Year Review of Beijing Women's Conference

WHAT:

UNITED NATIONS, New York—Over the next two weeks, UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, will be involved in a number of events during the review and appraisal of the outcomes of the Beijing conference on women in New York from 28 February to 11 March. The events will emphasize the centrality of the Beijing outcomes to improving the status of women and highlight the need for the international community to follow-through with actions that it had agreed on in Beijing in 1995.

Some of the side events that UNFPA will organize, support or participate in include:

Monday, 28 February  

  • “Women, Ageing and Health: Ten Years On”

    Where: Conference Room 7, United Nations
    When: 1:15-2:45 p.m.
    Organizers: UNFPA and World Health Organization

Tuesday, 1 March

  • “Eliminating Violence Against Women in Muslim Societies”

    Where:Church Center, 777 United Nations Plaza (corner of 44th Street and 1st Avenue).
    When: 9:30 a.m.
    Organizer: Women’s Learning Partnership, supported by UNFPA

Thursday, 3 March

  • “Safeguarding Maternal Health: Women’s Empowerment and Reproductive Health for Achieving MDGs,” a high-level event that will be opened and moderated by UNFPA Executive Director Thoraya Ahmed Obaid

Friday, 4 March

  • Release of Symposium Report by the International Planned Parenthood Federation /Western Hemisphere Region. UNFPA Executive Director Thoraya Ahmed Obaid will be main speaker

  • "Waves of Violence - Tides of Silence," a seminar focusing on the capacity of women affected by the tsunami to actively participate in recovery efforts
