New Video Captures the Recovery Efforts for Survivors of Pakistan’s Floods

  • 17 December 2010

More than five months after one of the worst floods in history, millions of people in Pakistan remain displaced and living without basic necessities. The floods that began in late July swept away homes, roads and bridges, crops and livestock, livelihoods and lives. Women and children are particularly vulnerable.

A new 11-minute documentary, ‘Giving Life a Chance’ sheds light on the urgent needs of displaced Pakistani women, and how UNFPA and its humanitarian partners are helping to address their needs.

Up to 70 per cent of the displaced are women and children, including about half a million pregnant women. Approximately 1,700 women go into labour every single day, and around 250 of them are expected to experience complications that require immediate medical intervention.

UNFPA continues to play a leading role in coordinating UN emergency response to the disaster, including life-saving reproductive health services to displaced women and preventing and responding to gender-based violence in the affected communities. The Fund is also involved in setting up secure places for vocational training, from tailoring to computer skills.

UNFPA works closely with federal, provincial, and district authorities, as well as NGOs, to provide reproductive health

services in a total of 20 districts. Following the crisis, the Fund expanded its partnerships with NGOs in regions of the country where it was not present before the disaster.
