On 9 November 2011, H.R.H. Crown Princess Mary of Denmark opened a photo exhibition, entitled “Welcome Citizen Number 7 Billion,” in the Danish capital. The opening event also marked the launch of UNFPA’s State of World Population 2011 report, “People and possibilities in a world of 7 billion”. Both the exhibition and the report explored challenges and possibilities in a world of seven billion -- the population milestone that the world had reached on 31 October.

“You are part of the biggest generation of youth the world has ever seen,” H.R.H. The Crown Princess told some 200 Danish and international students attending the event at Copenhagen’s Town Hall. “In a very big crowd of seven billion, you may think that your choices do not matter, but it is the combined choices of you all that make up the future of our world.”

The event was attended by Christian Friis Bach, Danish Minister for Development Cooperation, Pia Allerslev, Mayor of Copenhagen, and Safiye Ça?ar, Director of UNFPA’s Information and External Relations Division, who presented the State of World Population report.

“The strong support of The Crown Princess for UNFPA’s work means a lot for us,” said Ms. Çagar. “She is very knowledgeable about our mandate and cares about the health and needs of women in developing countries.”

The photo exhibition featured world-class images by National Geographic photographers and explored eight themes related to population dynamics. The show, which had also been displayed in Norway, Finland and Sweden, was jointly produced by UNFPA, National Geographic and the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
