The position is located in the Adolescents and Youth Team of the Sexual and Reproductive Health Branch (SRHB) in the Technical Division and reports to the AY team lead (primary supervisor) and Chief of the Sexual and Reproductive Health Branch (secondary supervisor) who provides overall strategic direction to the adolescents and youth work of UNFPA.
Job Purpose
Fragility, conflict and violence, a defining feature of today’s world, have a devastating impact on women, girls, and young people - and the realization of UNFPA’s mandate, the ICPD Programme of Action.
Recent UN resolutions on sustaining peace stress that peace is the shared task of the entire UN system, requiring joined-up approaches across all of the pillars of UN engagement. UNFPA’s mandate, and the core aims of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICDP) Programme of Action, are relevant before, during and after conflict. UNFPA’s work to support the ICPD agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can make a critical contribution to sustaining peace. At the same time, peace is a necessary precondition for the achievement of UNFPA’s key development results of realizing universal access to family planning, reducing maternal mortality, and reducing gender-based violence, because conflict poses a major threat to these objectives.
UNFPA’s Strategic Plan (2022-2025) includes a focus on women and youth as agents of change across all areas of its work, including women and young people’s leadership and meaningful engagement on peace. This builds upon UNFPA’s central role in the UN system’s work on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and Youth, Peace and Security (YPS). The Strategic Plan also identifies “complementarity among development, humanitarian and peace responsive efforts” as one of six “accelerators” necessary to delivering its strategy, and aligns with the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development, including directly contributing to SDG 16 on promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development.
Working in the Adolescent and Youth team in SRHB and under the direct supervision of the AY team lead, the incumbent is responsible for providing policy, technical, programmatic and operations support to UNFPA’s work in the area of peacebuilding, with a special focus on youth, peace and security and humanitarian action.
Education:
Advanced degree in social sciences, sociology, law, or related field;
Knowledge and Experience:
● 7 years of relevant experience at national and international level;
● Experience within the United Nations, in relation to gender equality, human rights and peace building and humanitarian affairs is an asset.
● Knowledge of UNFPA mandate and priority areas
● Demonstrated strong analysis and excellent report writing and editing skills;
● Excellent inter-personal and communications skills;
● Ability to plan, organize and multi-task;
● Be able to manage documents, correspondence and reports
● Ability to manage information and work flow; must have knowledge of the institutions of the UN system.
● Computer literacy including high level of comfort using Microsoft Office programmes and Internet based research; ability to participate effectively in a team-based, information sharing environment.
