The Position:

The Personal Data Protection Specialist post is located at the Legal Unit (“LU”), Office of the Executive Director and reports to the Chief, Legal Unit (“LU”), Office of the Executive Director.

In consultation with relevant stakeholders, the Personal Data Protection Specialist is responsible for conducting privacy risk assessments, leading the development of internal data protection and privacy policies and external privacy statements, developing a personal data protection roll-out strategy, leading the roll-out, serving as a focal point for internal and external inquiries concerning UNFPA's data protection and privacy policies, and serving as a focal point for breaches of UNFPA's data protection and privacy policies.

Job Purpose:

UNFPA is subject to the United Nations Principles on Personal Data Protection and Privacy adopted by the CEB (1…) and has issued a personal data protection policy. The Personal Data Protection Specialist will mainstream personal data protection throughout UNFPA’s policy, programme and operational framework. In consultation with relevant stakeholders, the Personal Data Protection Specialist is responsible for conducting privacy risk assessments, leading the development and review of internal data protection and privacy policies and external privacy statements, developing a personal data protection roll-out strategy, leading the roll-out, serving as a focal point for internal and external inquiries concerning UNFPA's data protection and privacy policies, and serving as a focal point for breaches of UNFPA's data protection and privacy policies. 

Requirements:

Qualifications and Experience

Education:  
 

Advanced university degree in law.  
 
Knowledge and Experience:
 
● 7 years of progressive experience in relevant legal practice
● Demonstrated experience/expertise in personal data protection and privacy matters
● Excellent analytical competencies
● Solid, high quality legal skills
● Good drafting skills in the English language
● Good negotiating skills
● Great team-working skills
● Understanding of the structure and law of the United Nations
 
Languages: 
 
Fluency in English is required; knowledge of other official UN languages, preferably French and/or Spanish, is an asset.
