The Position:

Under the overall direction of the UNFPA Representative and direct supervision of the UNFPA Deputy Representative, the Humanitarian Coordinator (HC) will be responsible for developing, and managing the Emergency/humanitarian response programme in South Sudan, with a special focus on Reproductive Health, HIV and GBV. The incumbent is expected to ensure that emergency preparedness, interventions and response to the implications of conflicts and natural disasters are efficiently functional, and being integrated into the Country Office (CO) regular programming.

Job Purpose:

With UNFPA Representative’s guidance, the HEC will undertake the leadership role of the the Humanitarian Response Unit (HRU) in the CO, and whenever feasible at the state-level field support units. The HEC will substantively contribute to the management of UNFPA activities in the areas of reproductive health and prevention and response to HIV and gender-based violence in humanitarian settings. Acting as an advisor, the HEC will proactively provide the Representative and Deputy Representative with information on programme progress and achieved results of UNFPA- humanitarian program implementation, and provides innovative approaches for the synchronization of humanitarian and early recovery/development programme activities along the Humanitarian-Development-Peace continuum.

Qualifications and Experience:

  1. Advanced University degree (Master's Degree or higher) in Public Health, with background in Medical or relevant Health sciences;
  2. Seven (7) years of relevant professional experiences in humanitarian technical assistance, programming and management in reproductive health, public health and GBV/Gender;
  3. Strong experience working in complex emergencies, including conflict settings for IDPs and refugees, especially in East Africa is a plus.  
  4. Strong experience delivering results through partnerships. 
  5. Proficiency in current office software applications;

Languages: 

Fluency in English; knowledge of other official UN languages, preferably Arabic is desirable.
