Population Data Fellow, Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (Guinea)

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

 

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of UNFPA Representative in Guinea and the Population and Development Officer, the International UN Volunteer will:

Specific to Guinea:

Support INS for data collection/analysis of data from SWEDD baseline survey on CRVS systems at communal levels;

Liaise with the GFF team members in Guinea working on CRVS to share recommendations for improvements to civil registration operations from the baseline survey

Support INS to produce regular reports on marriage registration data and help integrate these data into programming efforts to improve marriage registration;

Under supervision of UNFPA’s Population and Development Branch Director in NY Office, the International UN Youth Volunteer will:

Learn contemporary technical methods of assessing data quality and completeness of civil registration data, adjusting civil registration data to account for coverage and content error, and producing vital statistics from civil registration data;

Support UNFPA staff in developing capacity building materials, R code tutorials, and worked examples to support staff from National Statistics Offices in assessing data quality and completeness of civil registration data, adjusting civil registration data to account for coverage and content error, and producing vital statistics from civil registration data;

Assist UNFPA technical staff in facilitating capacity building workshops and data laboratories for officials from National Statistics Offices and civil registration authorities;

Contribute to the development of R code libraries to support data processing and analysis of civil registration data, using standard tools such as R, R Studio, and GitHub;

Contribute to routine and ad-hoc discussions and meetings within UNFPA on civil registration, vital statistics and legal identity;

Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

 

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level: Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

University undergraduate degree or equivalent in the quantitative social sciences, such as demography, public health epidemiology, statistics, sociology, economics or related discipline (such as computer science).

 

Required experience: 24 Months

 

Experience remark:

Experience (2 years) in applied statistics, public health, and demography

Good interpersonal, networking and communication skills;

Willingness to contribute and work as part of a team;

Flexible and open to learning and new experiences;

Respect for diversity and adaptability to other cultures, environments and living conditions;

Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;

Computer programming skills (particular in R, or related statistical programming language) and willingness to learn (or existing familiarity with) GitHub or version control systems;

Computer skills (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media, and others).
