Job Purpose

The Digital Editor Consultant will be responsible for acquiring, conceptualizing, developing, writing and editing written and visual content for UNFPA digital platforms. The incumbent will be instrumental in the relaunch of the global website by rewriting out-of-date content and producing language for new pages. The Digital Editor Consultant will make recommendations for restructuring or redesigning the site to make it more user-friendly and advise the digital team on user interface and user experience matters from a readers’ perspective. The Digital Editor Consultant will also act as an interface and content producer for other UNFPA teams or projects. 

The Digital Editor Consultant ensures that the content is:

  • accurate, appropriate, timely, optimized for search engines and engaging
  • conforms to journalistic standards and UNFPA style/branding

The Digital Editor Consultant must be committed to UNFPA’s values and guiding principles; be able to work on a team; and have excellent judgment both editorially and interpersonally. The incumbent must be able to write and edit fresh, accurate, jargon-free copy on deadline and create visibility for the organization. The Digital Editor Consultant must be in tune with latest trends in website design, social media integration and menu design. 

Organizational Setting

The Digital Editor Consultant is situated in the Media and Communications Branch of the Division for Communications and Strategic Partnerships and reports directly to the Digital Communications Manager.

Major Activities/Expected Results

Content Development

  • Acts as interface and content producer to other UNFPA teams or projects;
  • Works with the UNFPA Individual Giving Programme to optimize the global website, it’s tone and user experience to receive individual donations
  • Works with focal points in UNFPA HQ Divisions to produce language and page structures that will represent the work of the organization as a whole;
  • Produces innovative and engaging copy for UNFPA campaigns.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Superb writing and editing skills, including a strong understanding of online storytelling, as well as a strong background in editorial work;
  • An advanced university degree in Journalism, Communications, International Development or a similar field with two years’ work experience; or Bachelor degree in Journalism, Communications, International Development or similar field with 4 years’ relevant work professional experience in news reporting, journalistic writing, public relations, editing or other areas of communications. Additional experience, in particular International experience, is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of web design, with understanding of user experience and user interface principles. Experience with writing which is optimized for search engines. Experience with writing for social media is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of international development issues.
  • Fluency in English, with excellent drafting abilities and digital editorial skills required.
  • Writing skills in French, Spanish or Arabic are an asset.

Duration and location:  11 months, remote work initially-to be reviewed
