Position

The Population and Situational Analysis writer and editor consultant is expected to finalise the revised UNFPA Population and Situational Analysis (PSA): A Methodological Guide. 

The PSA is a signature publication for UNFPA and provides guidance for an integrated appraisal of population dynamics, reproductive health and gender shortfalls, and prospects for demographic dividend(s), in the context of overall development trajectories in a given country.

The consultant will guide the production schedule of the publication UNFPA Population and Situational Analysis (PSA): A Methodological Guide, and will be supported through weekly production meetings with the Reference Group and the supervising Branch Chief to assure timely delivery of excerpts, case studies and other inputs from colleagues; the potential to hire external specialists for key sections will be considered where unique additional expertise may be required.

Scope of Work

The Population and Situational Analysis writer and editor consultant will finalise the revised UNFPA Population and Situational Analysis (PSA): A Methodological Guide.

Working from the revised PSA outline and partial revisions already produced by UNFPA, the consultant will:

  • Take stock of outstanding revisions needed and develop a clear workplan; 
  • Work with the Reference Group to generate or solicit outstanding drafts, select and develop case studies, and update reference links; 
  • Work with the PDB media and communication specialists to select and proof figures and tables, and propose the overall production design;
  • Edit the final product to assure a consistent narrative, voice, and analytic approach. 

The consultant will guide the production schedule, and be supported through weekly production meetings with the Reference Group and the Population and Development Branch Chief to assure timely delivery of excerpts, case studies and other inputs from colleagues; the potential to hire external specialists for key sections will be considered where unique additional expertise may be required.

The following deliverables are expected: 

  • Inception report and workplan,
  • Initial complete draft,
  • Final version.

Requirements

Education

Advanced University degree (Masters level) in Demography, Population Studies, or a related field in the quantitative social sciences required;  doctorate desirable

Knowledge and Experience

  • Ten (10) years relevant experience in the field of population analysis, demographic research, and/or development policy; 
  • Experience using census and survey data for national development planning and policies;
  • Experience working in developing countries;
  • Excellent English writing and editing skills;
  • Team management experience a plus.
