Why we innovate

The world is changing rapidly. Now is the time to harness new innovations that can provide breakthrough solutions that deliver sexual and reproductive health for all.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) recognize innovation as critical to accelerating progress towards global development aspirations. We must embrace innovation to deliver on our three transformative results: to end preventable maternal deaths, end unmet need for family planning, and end violence gender-based violence and all harmful practices, including female genital mutilation and child, early and forced marriage.

How we innovate

UNFPA promotes innovation to improve programming by:

  • creating innovative solutions with partners to address bottlenecks
  • scaling up innovations that have proven to be successful
  • partnering with innovators from the public and private sectors
  • institutionalizing a culture of innovation in UNFPA

The Innovation Fund, sponsored by the Governments of Denmark and Finland, was instrumental in nurturing a culture of innovation across the organization and identifying new innovations and partnerships that improve the lives of women and girls, everywhere.

UNFPA’s innovation projects have included a global crowdsourcing challenge, mobile fund transfers in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP) in Congo, a hackathon in partnership with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Uganda, and many more.
