The Sahel Women’s Empowerment and Demographic Dividend (SWEDD) Project (covering Burkina Faso, Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Mauritania, Mali and Niger) aims to accelerate the demographic transition, to spur the demographic dividend, and to reduce gender inequality in the Sahel region. Investing in the social and economic empowerment of adolescent girls is essential for achieving these aims. Delaying early marriage and childbearing will help lower dependency ratios, and increasing young women’s participation and productivity in the labor market will help prime the region to capture a demographic dividend.  The first window of activities under project component 1.2, empowering girls, includes life skills and sexual and reproductive health knowledge projects that build adolescent girls’ capacity to lead healthy and productive lives. Accordingly, all six countries will implement Safe Space Clubs. These clubs will serve as a platform for the delivery of skills, development of social assets, and linking to services.

Currently a health and life skills curriculum for learners age 9-12 and age 13+, as well as a facilitator’s guide, has been developed for use in these Safe Space clubs and UNFPA and the World Bank wish to ensure the best conditions of the roll out in the six countries. UNFPA and the World Bank is seeking to hire a consultant to provide technical support to the SWEDD countries in support of the roll-out phase to the six SWEDD countries.

  • a Mentee user guide
  • Set of tools to ensure monitoring and evaluation (based on UNFPA’s existing model)
  • A list of tools and teaching aides (including, but not limited to, anatomical models, pictures box, etc.)
  • A regional training of trainers in countries for the mentors
  • Field missions to provide technical assistance to the six SWEDD countries for the implementation.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Master or PhD in sociology, education, anthropology, economics, international development, humanities or a related field
  • At least seven years of experience in curriculum development, with a focus on health knowledge, gender and socio-emotional skills for adolescent girls in developing country settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead dialogue with client countries on curriculum development.
  • Experience in programming for adolescent girls
  • Experience working in the Sahel region
  • Fluency in both French and English is required.
  • Previous experience with UNFPA is a plus
