Brazil Humanitarian Emergency

Brazil continues to receive large numbers of Venezuelan refugees and migrants, as a result of the ongoing political and economic crisis in Venezuela. Many have since left Brazil, but thousands who remain urgently require humanitarian assistance. Most refugees and migrants enter Brazil through the northern state of Roraima. As a result of Roraima's isolated location in the Amazon region, most Venezuelans remain in the state, mostly in and around the capital Boa Vista. Socio-economic conditions in the state are difficult, however. Since 2018, the Brazilian government has provided support to Venezuelan migrants and refugees through its Operação Acolhida (Operation Welcome in English). Nevertheless, many continue to face very difficult conditions, including a lack of safe shelter, sanitation and difficulty accessing food as well as other basic services. More than two-thirds of registered refugees and migrants in Roirama are women and girls. They face an increased risk of sexual exploitation and abuse and gender-based violence (GBV). UNFPA is distributing dignity kits and is supporting women and adolescents with information and referrals for reproductive health and GBV services.
