The Asian and Pacific Population Conference (APPC) has been convened by the UN Economic and Social Commission on Asia and Pacific (ESCAP) every 10 years for the past five decades. The Conference plays a critical role in setting the agenda for population and development policies in the region. In addition, it has provided a vital forum for forging and strengthening partnerships across the region in the field of population and development for half a century.

The Sixth Asian and Pacific Population Conference was convened by ESCAP in cooperation with UNFPA and served as an intergovernmental platform for the Asia-Pacific preparations for the special session of the General Assembly on the ICPD Beyond 2014Ministers and senior officials from 47 countries were among nearly 500 country delegates and civil society representatives attending the Conference.

After the Conference a comprehensive Asian and Pacific Ministerial Declaration on Population and Development was adopted. The Declaration  reasserted the key principles of the ICPD Programme of Action and stressed States’ responsibility to protect human rights and to address the root causes of poverty
