ICPD at 10 Review

The 10th Anniversary of the ICPD, in 2004, marked the mid-point of its 20-year Programme of Action. This offered an opportunity to reflect on progress to date and take stock of challenges ahead. Towards this end, UNFPA conducted an in-depth, country-by-country analysis of achievements, constraints, lessons learned and viable approaches towards full implementation of the ICPD PoA. The 10th Anniversary was also an opportunity to reflect on the diversity of the ICPD goals, and demonstrate how their achievement would forward progress toward the Millennium Development Goals. This page reflects some of the highlights of the ICPD at Ten Review.

At the mid-point in what was originally conceived of as a 20-year time-horizon, UNFPA issued three publications on implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action.

Several publications document the ICPD + 10 review:

Investing in People: National Progress in Implementing ICPD This Global Survey includes responses from 169 countries on the steps they have taken to implement the Cairo Programme of Action, including measures related to population and development, gender equality, women's empowerment, reproductive rights and health and HIV and AIDS. A summary is also available.

The volume contains, in multiple languages as relevant, the declarations, resolutions, and action plan from the official reports of the review meetings of the UN Regional Commissions and the Commission on Population and Development, held between 2002-2004.
